A simple spatial model for self-heating compost piles
نویسندگان
چکیده
We model the increase in temperature in compost piles due to micro-organisms undergoing exothermic reactions. The model incorporates two types of heat release: one due to biological activity; and the other due to the oxidation of cellulosic materials. In this study we also include the consumption of oxygen. We investigate the bifurcation behaviour and compare the results obtained from models that include and exclude oxygen consumption in both oneand two-dimensional geometries.

Compost age and sample storage effects on maturity indicators of biosolids compost.
Compost product safety and quality assurance are required to meet the needs of the horticultural, agricultural, and silvicultural user markets. At present, there exist no industry-wide sampling and testing protocols for compost products, thus limiting the production sector. The objective of this research was to test three methods for determining compost maturity. The study followed the composti...
متن کاملAssessing the Stability and Maturity of Compost at Large-scale Plants
Four different tests to assess compost stability were compared during green waste composting in windrows at a largescale composting plant. The tests used were: germination index, (based on seed germination); SOUR (specific oxygen uptake rate, respirometric method based on O2 consumption by the microorganisms); self-heating test, (reflecting the energy output from the aerobic process); and Solvi...
متن کاملPile mixing increases greenhouse gas emissions during composting of dairy manure.
The effect of pile mixing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during dairy manure composting was determined using large flux chambers designed to completely cover replicate pilot-scale compost piles. GHG emissions from compost piles that were mixed four times during the 80 day trial were approximately 20% higher than emissions from unmixed (static) piles. For both treatments, carbon dioxide (CO(2...
متن کاملDispersal of Aspergillus fumigatus from Sewage Sludge Compost Piles Subjected to Mechanical Agitation in Open Air.
Aerosolization of the thermophilous fungal opportunist Aspergillus fumigatus from mechanically agitated compost piles was examined at a pilot-scale sewage sludge composting facility and two other selected test sites. Aerosols of A. fumigatus downwind from stationary compost piles were insignificant in comparison with those downwind from agitated piles. These aerosols were generated by a front-e...
متن کاملPhysical covering for control of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. in static and windrow composting processes.
This study investigated the effect of a 30-cm covering of finished compost (FC) on survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. in active static and windrow composting systems. Feedstocks inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 (7.41 log CFU/g) and Salmonella (6.46 log CFU/g) were placed in biosentry tubes (7.5-cm diameter, 30-cm height) at three locations: (i and ii) two opposing sides at ...
